Departments
Every city or town has its departments to serve the citizens in the best possible way. Each department varies in functions and they include police, emergency management agency, health, planning, human resource, highway, community corrections, maintenance, solid waste, GIS, communications, SWCD (soil and water conservation district), planning and building, electricity and historical museum and many.
The county departments are controlled by the elected representatives or commissioners of that particular region. Whitley County has three elected commissioners. They are solely responsible for the proper functioning of the departments.
County’s Police department provides security to the citizens and works for the efficiency in providing safety. It works hard and implements latest technologies in the safety and welfare of the public is its ultimate goal. Highway departments are responsible for the maintenance of road and for its repair whenever necessary. During winters, they have to remove the heaps of snow from the path for a smooth traffic. The Health Department encourages sound health for all the citizens by conducting health campaigning programs. Whitley County birth and death records are also registered in the health department.
Emergency management agency deals with the disaster prevention and also warns before the occurrence of any natural calamity. The geographic information about the various locations is provided by the GIS department. Human resource department enhances the work of all Whitley County offices and employees to promote organizational growth. It also works for the recruitment of the employees for the Whitley Council.
The major works regarding the planning and zoning of new buildings for commercial and residential sites and old building renovation are done by the Planning and Building department. The function of jail or sheriff is to check the inmate reports, checking hand gun license and theft reports are registered in this department. Soil and water conservation districts provide better utilization of soil and water resources in a more productive way; they also provide information about the soil to the farmers. Engineering/ survey department works for the construction of drains, bridges and small structures in the county region.
